ABOUT ISKCON ATLANTA
ISKCON Atlanta is a spiritual and cultural center dedicated to sharing the timeless wisdom of the Vedic scriptures and the practice of Bhakti Yoga. Officially established in 1974 by ISKCON’s Founder-Ācārya, His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Śrīla Prabhupāda, the community traces its beginnings to 1971, when its first temple was founded on 13th Street in Midtown Atlanta. In 1974, the temple moved to its current location and was lovingly named New Panihati Dhām, in remembrance of the divine pastimes of the Lords Gaura-Nitāi (who are none other than Śrī Krishna Balarāma).
Recognized as the first Krishna (Hindu) community in Georgia and the southeastern United States, ISKCON Atlanta is also the region's longest-standing ISKCON center and was home to the first Gaura-Nitāi and Radha-Krishna Deities in Georgia. In 1975, Śrīla Prabhupāda visited the temple. Upon seeing the Gaura-Nitāi Deities, He was deeply moved, and wept in divine emotion. During this visit, He referred to ISKCON Atlanta as one of the best temples and personally guided the devotees - most memorably by teaching them how to play the mṛdaṅga for the bhajan “Parama Karuṇa.” These sacred moments remain deeply cherished within the community.
The temple is formally recognized under ISKCON Law as one of seven holy tīrthas (shrines) of Śrīla Prabhupāda worldwide, with His room preserved as a museum and place of pilgrimage.
What began as a humble effort has grown into a vibrant center of devotion, education, and service. Today, ISKCON Atlanta offers daily worship, festivals, classes, and outreach programs, serving as a spiritual home for devotees and a welcoming place of discovery for all.
ABOUT ISKCON
The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), also known as the Hare Krishna movement, is a global spiritual organization founded in 1966 in New York City. ISKCON is based on the teachings of the ancient Vedic scriptures, particularly the Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad Bhāgavatam. Its mission is to promote Krishna consciousness through devotion to Lord Krishna, congregational chanting of the holy names, and a life centered on spiritual values.
Today, ISKCON has hundreds of temples, centers, and communities worldwide. Through festivals, book distribution, food relief programs, education, and cultural activities, ISKCON aims to cultivate spiritual awareness, compassion, and a deeper understanding of the self and the Supreme.
ABOUT SRILA PRAbhupada
His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Śrīla Prabhupāda is the Founder-Ācārya of ISKCON and the foremost ambassador of Krishna consciousness to the Western world. At the age of 69, Śrīla Prabhupāda traveled from India to the United States with the mission of sharing the teachings of Lord Krishna beyond India’s borders. Despite immense challenges, He established ISKCON and inspired millions through His teachings and example.
Śrīla Prabhupāda translated over 70 volumes of Vedic literature to English, making the profound wisdom of the Vedas accessible to a global audience. His legacy continues through His books, guiding generations toward a life of devotion, humility, and loving service to Krishna. A savior for mankind, His work continues to transform the lives of thousands of people today.
